Preparing for the Arrival of Preschool Photographers

There are several options when it comes to having in-house photography for preschools in Sydney. Whether you are relying on the preschool photographers to set up backdrop and lighting station inside the centre, or you would like to embrace the outdoor area for naturally lit photos, there is some work that will no doubt be required to achieve your photography goals. Here are just some of the ways you can prepare you centre, staff and children for photo day.

Centre Clean Up

Whichever set-up you intend to have for photo day, some slight modifications will need to be made to most centres. For example, if your photos are inside, you will need to clear some space, so the crew have a blank canvas to work with. They will generally require a few metres squared for a backdrop, tripod and lighting set-up. So be sure to factor this in and consider which space can be used for this for 1-2 days.

If you are having your photos outside, why not get the children involved in an outdoor area clean up? You can focus on some gardening, tidying of toys and setting up of props. Making children feel part of the photo day set-up can help them to create a positive and enjoyable connection with the experience of having their photo taken.

Staff Uniforms

If your staff have a uniform now is the time to make sure everyone wears the correct uniform and presents well on the day. If you do not have a uniform, consider wearing the same-coloured t-shirt or insist on a dress code for the day to establish professionalism. Give your staff plenty of notice to ensure they are present for photo day as this day is just as important to them as is it is to the children and their families. Group photos will include the room leaders and educators who spend many hours per week with the children. It’s important they also have a great experience.

Student Talk

If you are concerned about how some children may react to new faces within the centre due to age or temperament, start talking with the students ahead of time about what will take place during photo day. If they seem unsure of the process, allow them to ask the photographer questions on the day, or sit in on a session of another child who is comfortable in front of the camera.
