How to take photos like Sydney's best preschool photographers

Preschool is one of a child’s biggest monumental moments- a time where your little ones first set off to explore life without their parents. An important event like this should be cause for a celebration- and there is no celebration without photos! With the rise of camera technology and portability, the potential for a professional photoshoot is limitless- where you are able to capture a beautiful moment with the click of a button. Here at Fotek School Portraits, the leading preschool photographer in Sydney, we have provided some tips and tricks to capture your child in the best light, and to be able to present them to others the way that you see them.

Diffuse the light source

When taking portrait shots, soft and natural light is always the best. Nobody enjoys looking at harsh light lighting in a preschool photograph, and as such, ensure that the light is diffused. By using diffused light, it reduces unnatural shadows as well as unnatural skin tones. To do so, you can have the background as a white wall to soften the light, as well as taking the photo with sunlight. Do not be afraid to take photos in the outdoors as well! As long as your lightning is not too harsh, feel free to use any backdrop you like.

Ensure the framing is correct

Framing is absolutely pinnacle to the professionalism of your shot- it is the key differentiator between a professional and an amateur. Our 40+ years of practice have helped us perfect this skill in preschool photography. When capturing a photo of your preschooler, ensure that they are the focal point of the photo. That is, they are directly in the centre- where all viewer’s eyes are drawn towards. Additionally, feel free to find unique angles! A portrait shot does not always have to be face on- they can be taken from an angle or even higher or lower. When taking a professional children photo, it is important to consider all possibilities.

Instruct your child on posing

Ensure that your subject is posing naturally. If they look stiff or nervous, it will show in the photo. Instruct them on natural posing tips, such as crossing their arms, or even looking away if needed. You want a professional photograph to capture a moment- not create one- therefore, the photo should seem as realistic as possible.
